With the 1992 book Françoise Huguier revisits, 30 years later, her long Siberian journey to the Behring Strait. The photographer plunged back into her contact plates and became aware of the already catastrophic pollution of the Arctic lands. She then thought of a new work that captures “the very essence of a Siberia on the edge of the abyss”, as Yann Arthus-Bertrand emphasizes in the preface.

1992 - the book

“In this book, Françoise Huguier invites us to this forgotten Russia in the early 1990s. She had only one idea in mind - to reach the Behring Strait - captured the very essence of a Siberia on the edge of the abyss.

Nothing is ever vertical or horizontal. Everything seems petrified in the mud and rust: abandoned tires, ruined buildings, bloodthirsty carcasses, earth ripped open by deep ruts, here is the real life. Few smiles in this universe. Yet, one can only be carried away by these powerful images and this humanity at the height of dirty snow and scratched huts. It is all the strength of Françoise Huguier to know we liver the keys of this world in decay, served by an implacable plastic mastery.

Yes, really, Françoise Huguier is a great lady of photography.” Yann Arthus-Bertrand

The original layout of 1992 was directly inspired by the constructivist artistic movement.
