Bois & Marines, Des forêts à la mer – Ewan LeboURDAIS
Official painter to the French Navy, Ewan Lebourdais takes us on a singular journey to the origins of shipbuilding: wood. It took four years to produce this book, punctuated by numerous visits to forests, hours of discussions with wood professionals, and attempts to capture the energy emanating from these majestic places and the passion of those who work there.
On first approach, nothing resembles one tree more than another, just as one wave resembles another. Over time, the brain begins to understand, the heart begins to feel, and the eyes and fingers just have to do the rest at the right moment, in the right light. The worlds of forest and sea have been intimately linked for centuries. They are populated by passionate experts sensitive to the beauty of the world.
This book reveals the itinerary of wood, from the forests where it is born to the seas where it travels the world. Matthieu de Guillebon's texts plunge us directly into the odyssey of wood, celebrating the work of men and women, from forest management to shipbuilding.
The book includes three major interviews with colorful personalities renowned in their respective fields: Thierry Juliot, a tree hunter and sawyer in Mayenne, Yann Mauffret, owner of the Guip shipyard, and Marc Rohou, operations manager of the La Recouvrance ship in Brest.
The book features an exposed sewing on the spine. This aesthetic choice, made by Ewan Lebourdais and the art director, allows the book to be opened completely flat, offering beautiful double-page photographs without the central fold disturbing the view.
